Dorthea Lange was born on May 26, 1895 in Hoboken, New Jersey.

She went to a teaching school in New York in 1917. She decided to pursue photography because she didn't have much interest in academics.

She had a stay at home mom that took care of her brother and her while her dad was a lawyer. When Dorthea reached her teen years her parents got divorced. She turned to art and literature during her upbringing.
